I got back from Kalibo on Saturday afternoon. We left here on Thursday, so all in all it was a very short trip. I got my visa, but most importantly I found tofu, chocolate and 2nd hand books! So despite the ugliness of Kalibo and the long travel to get there and back, I am happy.
I have finally been able to secure two days for barangay health care worker training. Training will be next week, with Mitos Rivera from IRH Manila coming down to Sugod to conduct the training. Malcolm is in Manila this week, so I'm in charge of organising everything. Yay!! I love organising!
I mentioned in the previous post that I would soon have pictures of jewelry. Who loves jewelry? I do!! and I'm sure that the ladies reading this do too. First, a little bit of background info. Unemployment here is sky high, around 80% in my village. Many women cannot get jobs because they are needed at home to do the laundry (when you are washing by hand, laundry takes up most of the day), cooking and taking care of younger kids. Meaningful Volunteer has started up a livelihood project here in Sugod, giving women an income. The women make the beads and jewelry themselves. The jewelry is sold online, and the women keep 90% of the money. (MV needs to take a teeny-tiny bit to buy more jewerly supplies in Manila).
anyway, here are a couple of pictures.
This pic shows the women varnishing the beads.
If you are in NZ and want to order some now, I can bring them back with me in August and then post them to you. Prices are as follows:Necklaces p250 (around NZ$9.00)
Bracelets p150 (around NZ$5.00)
earrings p80 (less than a cup of coffee = NZ$2.70)
Hmmm, it's all rather cheap, isn't it? Maybe we should raise our prices. Quick, order now before we change the prices!
This is a lot cheaper than the stuff at Trade Aid!! And you can be sure that your money is helping deserving women. I will have more pictures soon.
