storm in teacup?
making a mountain out of molehill?
Let me provide you with the perfect example:

Picture this: I'm in writing class with my 4a students. It's our second class together, they're all still a little quiet. So I'm joking around, trying to get them to relax. Students are in pairs, and they're meant to be discussing the exercise together. One pair of students are completely quiet and not talking to each other at all. So, casually, I say something like "hey James? Why aren't you and Bruce talking to each other? Maybe you don't like him!" Of course, this is all meant in jest, the class laughs, we move on. I think nothing of it. Why would I? I've said something like this many times, and there has never been a problem.
...
that is until yesterday. James comes down to the staffroom looking for me and asks to speak to me. He then precedes to tell me off, saying that he 'knows what I meant' and that he was very offended by my joke, and then I am a very mean person. Utterly gobsmacked, I explain that I was joking, and that perhaps cultural difference could account for why he misinterpreted my comment. James gets more angry, I apologize, we reach a truce, and then he drops this:
"If you do it again, I'll tell your boss. I'll be watching you."
Wow, talk about disrespect. In a society where teachers are usually given the utmost respect, it is so incredibly rude of him to say something like that. So I explained to him that I understood that he was upset, but that threatening the teacher was not at all appropriate. we parted ways, and I thought that was the end of it.

...
until today! My boss calls me, and explains that James was SO ANGRY that he skipped all of yesterdays classes. (he also walked out of my class this morning, citing "business emergency"). James also complained to management, and threatened to get the whole class to sign a statement saying that I wasn't joking, that I was being mean. He also has demanded that I am removed as their writing teacher.

what the hell? seriously, what the hell?

Oh, hang on, now I understand. James is a middle-aged Korean male who cannot stand to be put in his place by a young white female. as another teacher commented, if he was a dog, he'd be pissing in the corner to mark his territory.
Luckily, school are supporting me and refusing to give in to his crazy demands. I have to apologise in front of the whole class tomorrow.
What a load of utter bullsh*t. No wonder i am counting the days until I leave.
