I have intense cravings for two things right now: avocados and whole-grain bread.
And of course, this being Korea, the land where you can hardly ever find things you want , my cravings will not be satisfied. (cynical? fed up? me? No?!) Avocados, while not that hard to find, are insanely expensive at regular supermarkets. I'm talking about $4 each. And while Costcos sells 5 for $10, the last few bags I've bought have all been black inside. Seriously, it's the biggest downer. Imagine being insanely excited about an avocado (maybe I need to get out more, be a litte more social?) and then cutting into it and finding it inedible? It's heartbreaking.
Oh, and whole-wheat bread is not easy to find, because in Korea they like to sweeten things that are not meant to be sweetened? Sweet garlic bread? why yes, you can find that in Korea. Sweet whole-wheat bread? Check. Unsweetened vegan whole-wheat bread? you've got to be kidding.
Actually, I have a bread-maker that I picked up second-hand, but an essential tiny metal part of the dish thingy broke off, and i have no clue where to find someone with a soldering iron, so it's a no-go at the moment. *sigh*
I am counting down the days until I leave this place. Yes, mostly so that I can see friends and family, but let's be honest. A huge part of the excitement of coming home is the food. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD! I can't wait to go to supermarket and buy all the yummy things I haven't been able to have for ages. I hope NZ has vegan cheese and vegan yoghurt. Because I became a vegan in Korea, i've never tried these magical amazing products. NZ better have them. It would be enough of a reason for me to choose Aus over NZ. Australia does have a wicked vegan nougat company that I will definitely become acqainted with. And the compant that makes those delicious vegan biscuits that taste just like Tim-Tams might also be Aussie .... hhmmmmm. Australia is sounding better and better!
