It's only Saturday night, but I feel like I've already had such a productive weekend. New friend Rachel (Kiwi, studying in Palmy to be a vet but in Sydney for the summer hols) showed me the back street cycle route to Paddy's Market in the city. I'd wandered around the market before but only ever found the cheap clothes part. Today I was introduced to the fresh fruit and veggie section. It reminded me so much of Korean supermarkets: noisy, frantic, and piles and piles of fruit and veg everywhere. I loved it! I'll take my camera next time.
Here is my stash, pretty amazing for $20. (Supermarket fruit and veg prices are rocketing after the Queensland floods, broccoli is up to $8 a kilo!)
Ta-da! Carrots, TWO kinds of kale, beets, lemons, broccoli, spinach, corn, cabbage, coriander. We had planned to take our bikes and shopping on the train back to Newtown but there was track work so we biked back, big green bags hanging from our handle bars. Oh, and the broccoli at the market was $3 a kilo!I have two obsessions at the moment: smoothies and bicycles. I don't have a picture of my bike because it's at the bike shop being fitted with a rear rack and basket, but I do have smoothie pictures! (Yip, I love my smoothies so much that I take pictures of them. More hippy points for me!)
This was my smoothie after I got back from that bike ride. Spinach + banana + water = healthy deliciousness! You can also see Bella snoozing in the background. Now, everyone likes a before and after shot. Before: junglesque darkness. After: behold the light!
Do you like my curtain? It's an old street banner. They sell them at my favourite shop, Reverse Garbage, a non-profit co-operative that collects and sells industrial offcuts of all sorts. THey're so cool that they tweet their latest finds! What makes Reverse Garbage even cooler is their location. They're in the same complex as the Sunday farmers market and ... The Bower. The Bower aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. It's like a giant opshop. I've got many a kitchen item there, and furniture, too. They take old and broken furniture, restore it, and re-sell it. Sounds basic but there's so much more to what they do. Click on the link above to read about all that they do. I have hopes that tomorrow will be just as productive as today. In the morning it's the inaugural meeting of the Pudding Club (more on that another time), and after that I'm catching a train to the nearest Bunnings to buy herbs, herbs, herbs. I hope to find pots to plant them in at Reverse Garbage tomorrow.
