So I started this job about 2 months ago. It was only ever meant to be something to help me pay rent until I find something better. The problem is that not many other better jobs have come along.
background info: this job has a very high turnover, partly because its mostly backpackers who stay for a little while and then move on, and also because management treat us like shiitake. We're all hired as casual staff ie no contract and pretty much no rights.
My job is calling people who have helped a charity before to ask them for more money. It's never sat well with me, but I have always called for a charity I've believed strongly in, and calling people who used to donate monthly.
I got changed to a new program on Wednesday calling for a charity that do a lot of work helping the homeless, running rehab programs and telephone crisis hotlines. A good charity (even though I'm not entirely okay with their churchy origins.)
The problem is that all the people I had to call are over the age of 80, most are 85+. I'm not okay with this. I'm not happy calling elderly people who are all on the pension and who kindly donated a one-off $5 or $10 a month ago and now I have to ask them for monthly donations. I find it incredibly rude that my company calls these elderly people and harasses them for money. I called this program for an hour on Wednesday before I went and spoke to a Team Leader about it. I first spoke to a Team Leader I'm friends with, just to ask if by registering my unhappiness I would get fired. He assured me that this wasn't the case. So I went to my Team Leader, explained how uncomfortable I was with the whole situation, he then got super angry with me and basically told me that I should leave for the night (2 hours early) and come back to work on Thursday, but that I probably wouldn't have a job.
To be clear: they could easily move me to another program, but management do have a record of just firing people who complain rather than trying to solve the problem.
So I went back on Thursday and got fired. Instead of moving me to a different program, they decided it was better to 'let me go'. Never mind the fact that I've worked there for the last two months, done well, never had any problems, and been the one fundraiser testing a new computer program, oh AND being put forward for a promotion. All of that counted for nothing.
I have enough money to last a few weeks, I have a job interview this week for an organisation that I love (fingers crossed, everyone!!), and I can find another crappy job to tide me over.
OOH, nearly forgot the funniest thing. After my boss gave me the bad news, I mentioned that I had a job interview with a big charity. He then asked me to put in a good word for him at this charity!!!!!!! um, hello, you just fired me! And you're a terrible boss with no management skills. Sure, I'll put in a good word! JEEZ.
