last night, on a whim, I decided to straighten my hair. I do this every now and then, just for fun. It's straight for a few days, then I miss my curls and wash it, and then about 2 months later I repeat the whole process.
But what really bugs me, is how much people love my straight hair. Why? Why would I hate getting compliments about my hair? Because most compliments are comparing it to my curly hair. "why Ingrid, your hair looks so much better straight!" (which I interpret as "why don't you do that all the time, its so much better than your messy curly hair). yes, yes, I'm being oversensitive. but this is a country where 95% of the population have dead-straight hair, and those who do have curly hair have that I-spent- an-hour-gently-curling-my- hair- into- Rapunzel-type curls.
After a traumatic childhood spent with brushed curly hair (and you know what curly hair looks like when its been brushed. If you don't, think 80s poofed-up hair. Going to the hairdresser was a traumatic time every time), I am finally at peace with my curls, I love them, most of the time.
